2021 Mercedes-AMG CLS53 Prices, Reviews, and Pictures

Overview

The 2021 CLS53 four-door coupe is elegant and sporty with a distinct design and a variety of AMG-specific enhancements. The engine is a smooth, turbocharged straight-six, 429-hp, turbocharged unit that is mated with an intelligent automatic transmission and standard all wheel drive. Although the CLS53 is almost identical in mechanical design to the Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan’s E53, its rear seat and trunk are more accommodating due to its more racier styling. The cabin is equipped with cutting-edge technology and seamlessly blends with a variety of luxurious materials and finishes. The CLS53 is more adept at long-distance driving than it is at backroad thrills. However, the CLS53 can still engage you when you turn on its most sporty performance settings. While the Audi S7 is more practical and exciting, the CLS53 is more expensive and more elegant.

What’s new for 2021?

Mercedes will install a completely new infotainment system for the CLS53 in 2021. The upgraded unit is called MBUX, short for Mercedes-Benz user experience. It features a touchscreen and a touchpad that provides haptic feedback. The unit also includes a voice-activated assistant (think Amazon Alexa and Apple’s Siri) as well as other innovative options. Navigation with augmented reality is the latest feature. This overlays real-time guidance onto a live stream of the road ahead and shows it on the screen. The CLS53 now features more advanced driver assist that can respond to traffic data and stop the car turning left if it sees approaching traffic. The CLS53 will be discontinued by Mercedes-AMG for 2022. However, buyers can still buy the CLS450 model under Benz-branded Mercedes-AMG.

Pricing and Which One To Buy

There is only one model available so we recommend focusing on the best options. For a more striking appearance, we would upgrade the 19-inch standard rims to 20 inches and add the Exterior lighting package with its automatic high beams and luminous headlights. We would add the Warmth and Comfort package, which includes heated steering wheel, front armrests and rapid heating for front-seat cushions, and nappa leathery upholstery to the interior. The CLS53’s elegant aura is enhanced by the head-up display and three-zone climate control. Soft-close doors, ventilated seats, and Acoustic Comfort package (laminated glasses that keep the cabin cooler and quieter). We would also choose the AMG performance exhaust to hear the louder sound and the Driver Assistance package to get its suite of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and more.

Engine, Transmission, & Performance

Each Mercedes-AMG CLS53 is equipped with a 3.0-liter turbocharged and electricly supercharged engine. It also includes a 48-volt hybrid system called EQ Boost. A nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. With EQ Boost increasing the horsepower to 21 and 184 lb ft, the engine produces 429 horsepower and 384 lb ft of torque. We tested the CLS53 and it reached 60 mph in 4.0 seconds. It also covered the quarter-mile in 12.5 secs at 111 mph. The inline-six is a characterful engine that revs quickly and has satisfying downshifts. Standard equipment on the AMG CLS53 includes an air suspension and adaptive dampers. The CLS53 has a smooth ride and a surefooted handling. However, the CLS can lose its composure when there are bumps or feel rough on uneven pavement. Similar E53 offers slightly more responsive handling and softer tuning. The CLS53’s electricly assisted steering is a great feature. It provides a direct, rich feedback experience.

Fuel Economy and Real World MPG

The CLS53 has a rating of 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway according to the EPA. It appears to be more efficient in the real world than the government estimates, with the CLS53 returning 30 mpg during our 75-mph highway fuel economy test route.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo

Mercedes is a master at integrating new technology into its interiors, while maintaining the old-world luxury that people expect from a Mercedes luxury sedan. The CLS53 is no exception. The CLS53’s four-door coupe has a warm cockpit. The CLS53 rear feels more like a sedan rather than a coupe with its three-across seating arrangement and 40/20/40 split folding rear seat. However, the sloped roofline makes it less spacious for adults. The trunk capacity is just 12 cubic feet.

Connectivity and Infotainment

The 2021 CLS53 comes with the Mercedes-Benz User experience (MBUX), which features a voice-activated assistant, multiple input methods, and a variety of other features. It can also be controlled via a large touchpad located on the console. MBUX includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well as three USB ports and built-in navigation. You can also choose from a Burmester surround sound audio system and a head-up display. AMG Track Pace is another option that allows you to store performance data from your vehicle on the infotainment interface while you drive on a road course.
