The Kia Seltos is a popular choice in the compact crossover segment due to its sleek, modern styling and reasonable pricing. The spacious cargo and passenger compartments offer plenty of flexibility for city dwellers.
Kia Seltos is back on the market for its second year with new safety features making it a more attractive compact crossover. This five-passenger vehicle offers a spacious interior and plenty of cargo space for weekend getaways. There are two engines available and you can choose from either front-wheel- or all-wheel drive. It is easy to find the Seltos that fits your needs. The Seltos is still a great choice for young couples or singles who are looking for their first car.
Pricing and Trims
You can choose from five trims of the Kia Seltos: LX (S), S, EX (Nightfall Edition), and SX Turbo. All trims except the S have all-wheel drive. We prefer the EX, even though the S is the most popular. We’ll tell you why.
The LX is priced at $23,665 plus a $11,175 destination fee. It comes with the base 2.0-liter engine, continuously variable auto transmission (CVT), all wheel drive, 17-inch wheels and cloth seats. There’s also an 8-inch infotainment screen, six speakers, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a six speaker audio system. Rear privacy glass, automatic headlights and lane departure warning, lane following assist, and forward collision avoidance assistance with pedestrian detection are some other features. Other options include puddle lights and remote start.
The S trim is the only one with front-wheel drive standard. It starts at $23,865. Additional standard features include front fog lights and LED positioning lamps, daytime running lights and heated side mirrors. There are also silver roof rails and LED interior lighting. Optional all-wheel drive and heated front seat are available.
The EX starts at $26,965 and includes standard all-wheel drive. It also features sunroof, synthetic leather seats, 10-way driver’s chair, 10-way power seat, wireless charging, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alarm, and wireless smartphone charging. We love this trim for its added safety and comfort features.
Nightfall Edition starts at $27,865 and features a 1.6-liter turbocharged motor, seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, 18 inch matte-black alloy wheels and cloth and synthetic leather seats. There is also a unique black grille, side sills and roof rails. You have the option of sport-style roof rails, heated front seats and outside mirrors that are roof-colored.
The SX Turbo starts at $29,165. It adds standard bifunction multi-focus reflector headlights and LED front fog lights to the vehicle. Optional sunroofs are available. This trim has a wider range of features than the top trims of the Subaru Crosstrek and Jeep Renegade.
Performance and Engine
Two powertrain options are available for the Kia Seltos. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a CVT is the base engine. It produces 146 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. These are very low numbers which translate into poor performance on the roads for the base engine. With the optional turbocharged four-cylinder of 1.6-liters and a seven-speed auto, the Seltos is much more fun to drive. The seven-speed automatic transmission is more responsive and has a better shift feel. The engine produces 175 horsepower and 195 lb-ft torque, which allows for faster acceleration than competitors like the Honda HR-V or Subaru Crosstrek. The engine does not affect the ride quality. The Seltos handles well thanks to its solid braking and crisp steering. Its compact dimensions will be appreciated by urbanites. The Seltos makes it easy to navigate narrow streets and parking in tight spots.
The Kia Seltos interior is comfortable and attractive with lots of soft-touch surfaces. The cabin looks more expensive than it is because of the high-quality synthetic leather and cloth trim. The front seating is comfortable and supportive, with plenty of adjustability, especially when it’s equipped with the 10-way power driver seat. The Seltos can carry five people, but the rear seat is too tight for three adults.
With 26.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, or 62.8 cubic yards with the rear seats folded down to their almost flat position, there’s plenty of room. The Seltos has a greater cargo capacity than either the Hyundai Kona, Subaru Crosstrek or Subaru Crosstrek. However, the rear hatch opening is smaller and might not be able to accommodate larger cargo.
