For those who aren’t afraid to go off-road but still want an SUV that can handle well in the city, the Land Rover Discovery is a great choice. The Discovery’s interior is beautiful and the powertrains are strong. However, it is a slow, hobby-horse ride that lets it down.
Land Rover nomenclature is confusing. Let’s clarify: The Land Rover Discovery midsize SUV is not the same as the smaller Land Rover Discovery Sport. The Discovery is more powerful than the Sport and has more towing power. It also offers more cargo space. The Discovery’s starting price is $12,000 more than the Sport.
Land Rover offers four SUVs that are similar in size: the versatile Discovery, the stylish Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Sport, as well as the rugged Defender 110. Each model offers a luxurious interior and varying levels of off-road performance. Because its three rows can be reconfigured, the Discovery’s interior is flexible enough to hold a wide variety of cargo and passengers. There are many competitors in this market, such as the Acura MDX, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and [BMW X5](/bmw /x5/).
Pricing and Trims
There are three trim levels for the 2022 Land Rover Discovery: S, S-R-Dynamic and HSE R-Dynamic. Although the S R-Dynamic trim is most popular, we recommend the standard Discovery S.
The entry-level Discovery S starts at $55,250 and features 20-inch wheels, a sliding front sunroof, fixed rear panoramic roof, rain sensor intermittent windshield wipers and puddle lights. LED taillights, trailer stability aid, rain-sensing intermittent window wipers, rear fog lights and rear fog lights. A variety of safety and off-road features are also available on the Discovery. A standard electronic air suspension, cornering brake controller, gradient acceleration control and hill descent control are some of the features. Roll stability control, torque vectoring through braking, roll stability control, roll stabilization control, roll stability control, torque control by braking, wade sensing for crossing deep waters are also available. This trim is highly recommended because it has a well-equipped cabin with enough capabilities for most buyers.
The S R-Dynamic ($57.750) allows you to upgrade to a six-cylinder engine with a larger displacement and adds blacked-out trim, wheel surrounds and side sills as well as special badging and trim.
The HSE R-Dynamic, which costs $75,000 more, features a powerful six-cylinder engine, 22-inch wheels, leather upholstery, upgraded leather upholstery, and heated front seats. It also has heated second-row and second-row seats. Other standard features include the high-powered Meridian audio system and adaptive cruise control.
Engine and Performance
Two engines are available for the Discovery: A turbocharged 296-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a turbocharged 355-hp 3.0-liter six cylinder. Standard four-cylinder engines provide adequate performance for most situations. Although it isn’t as powerful off the line, especially with passengers onboard, the four-cylinder engine is equally quiet and smooth.
The steering feel is quite natural for an SUV. It has progressive feedback and is accurate. You don’t have to make changes in your lane. Stable, with very little wandering. The Discovery’s only problem is its ride comfort. It doesn’t absorb road impacts well and is tippy from side to side. In that way, it feels old-fashioned off-roader.
Land Rover Discovery’s interior is refined and elegant, with high-quality materials. The first row of seats is extremely comfortable and supportive. The second row is large. The third-row space is quite small, so adults shouldn’t expect to be able to fit in there. With all the seats in place, the cargo area is just over 9 feet. However, it expands to 45 feet when the third-row seats are folded down. This is enough space to store luggage for a week.
Connectivity and Infotainment
The standard infotainment features include a 11.4-inch touchscreen, Trip Computer, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Land Rover’s native Pivi Pro user interface and SiriusXM satellite radio. There are also front and rear 12V outlets. A front USB port is available, as well as a set of USB ports in the console. The touchscreen is sharp and clear. However, the interface could be quicker to respond and more intuitive to use. The center screen displays numerous cameras that can be used to guide off-roading or towing. The screen can be touched to fold down the third and second rows. This is a useful feature for loading passengers.
